The lymphatic system is a network of tissues & organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph, a fluid containing white blood cells throughout the body. There are hundreds of lymph nodes in the human body. They are located deep inside the body, such as around the lungs & heart, or closer to the surface, such as under the arm or groin. The lymph nodes are found from the head to around the knee area. The aim of Manual Lymphatic Drainage is to move fluid from the swollen area into a place where the lymphatic system is working properly. To do this, the therapist first uses specialized skin movements to clear the way that they want the fluid to drain to. It may seem strange to have the therapist treat your chest and neck if you have swelling in your arm. But it means the fluid has somewhere to drain to when the therapist treats your arm. You usually lie down to have manual lymphatic drainage. But if you have swelling in your face and neck, you sit up. You will feel gentle pressure. The skin movements are very light so that the little lymph vessels are not flattened. The movements are slow and light so the lymph vessels open up. Your regular massage addresses your individual issues best; pain management, postural imbalances, an injury, or muscle soreness from your workouts. An occasional Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment is an amazing compliment to this routine. The high tech machines used (such as those from Hydrafacial) are specifically developed to move lymphatic fluid. It uses a suction while your practitioner glides a tool over the body or face with special attention to lymph nodes. We love finding unique bodywork options to keep you feeling your best.
